The clutch cover, or pressure plate, bolts to the flywheel over the clutch disc. Its spring-loaded diaphragm squeezes the disc against the flywheel to transmit engine power to the gearbox. When you press the clutch pedal, a release bearing pushes on the diaphragm fingers, easing the clamp and freeing the disc so you can shift. As the diaphragm spring and friction surface wear, clamping force drops, so the cover is replaced alongside the disc.
